A Kathak Dance Drama on Redefining Friendship, Femininity, and the Sacred.
Sakhi Ri is a deeply intimate and evocative Kathak dance drama that redefines the meaning of sakhi — a word that has long symbolized the gentle, listening friend — by turning the gaze inward. In this production, the sakhi is not another girl in the courtyard, nor a confidante under the tree, but the girl’s own menstrual cycle — the most natural, yet often silenced, rhythm of her body.
Told through the graceful storytelling of Kathak, Sakhi Ri traces the emotional journey of a young girl as she meets, resists, hides from, and finally embraces her periods. The production questions inherited silences, unpacks the stigma surrounding menstruation, and slowly unfolds a new narrative — where the cycle is not a curse, but a companion. Not shame, but shakti.
Through taal, abhinaya, and poetry, Sakhi Ri offers a reimagined mythology — one where the body is not hidden, but honored. It is a celebration of womanhood, a conversation with the self, and a call to rethink what we call sacred.
This is not just a performance. It is a quiet revolution — rhythmic, red, and resoundingly real.
